ELEVATE Screening device
Challenge
The current WHO recommendation for HPV testing as a primary cervical cancer screening tool has not yet been adopted in many low- and middle-income countries. HPV testing is however more effective and efficient in the detection of precancerous lesions with a high risk of developing into cancer when compared with cytology and visual inspection techniques. The lack of trained healthcare workers and lab infrastructure remains an important barrier. In order to implement primary HPV testing in low- and middle-income countries, there is a need for an affordable, innovative point-of-care molecular diagnostic tool that is sensitive and specific, acceptable to users, and that can be integrated into primary health settings as screen-and-treat model.
Solution
CHILI aims to adapt the ELEVATE screening device and scale-up its production process in an affordable way to be used for universal screening in low- and middle-income countries, while still offering an HPV screening test with high sensitivity and specificity.
