Societal impact
Challenge
Poor knowledge about risk factors and preventive measures, and stigma and myths on screening and treatment of (pre-)cancers are still strong bottlenecks for the prevention and management of cervical cancer, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Similarly, pre- and post-counselling activities are often poor which also jeopardize the impact of any cervical test. Uptake is hampered by not taking the time to explain the test well enough or by not addressing the doubts and misunderstandings women might have when offered the test. Post-counselling and referral are as important: women might share bad experiences and lack of support to obtain follow-up care, among each other, lowering women’s interest and willingness to get screened.
Solution
CHILI aims to develop and implement a screening strategy that will optimize the context in which standard tests and the new ELEVATE test will be offered. As such, we will improve awareness, pre- and post-counselling and enforce referral of detected cases. In addition, the consortium aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the new screening strategy and its potential impact on cervical cancer incidence.
