Screening pathways
Challenge
Information on basic indicators of cervical cancer in low- and middle-income countries is scarce. Cancer registries have been only recently set up, or have limited geographical scope. While these are essential steps to gather crucial information, the available data are still limited. Similarly, estimates on screening coverage are lacking or rely on a very limited number of studies. As such, local screening levels are unknown, as well as the main barriers. While poor coverage is partly due to lack of demand, barriers on the supply side also need to be better understood in order to identify how the health system can be strengthened.
Solution
CHILI proposes to conduct situation analyses in the selected low- and middle-income countries and to collect data to complement. To do so, we will collaborate with policy makers and national experts, as well as with health staff, community members and local women. This information will feed the development of the new screening strategies as well as the modelling exercise to estimate the cost-effectiveness.
